The Unleashed Monster
by Anna McAllister

Too hungry to question,
Too cold to argue,
Too disheartened to protest.
Promises of
More food,
More work,
More warmth
Beckoned an inviting hand.
The chains were wrapped
So softly, so subtly, that
Soon it was too late.
Desperation had unleashed
A dragon too wild to tame,
Its slashing teeth
And scorching breath
Blazing a red-stained path, while
The world still slept in peace,
Unaware of the shadow.
Too fearful to question,
Too complacent to argue,
Too ignorant to protest.
